The Meaning of Arashi-Do

The momentum of the storm, the fluidity of water, the dignity of the tiger

In the Japanese language, Arashi (嵐) signifies the immense, cleansing power of the storm, while Do (道) denotes the philosophical journey and life path of martial art practice.

Much like ocean waves shaped by storm winds, a karateka learns to be both fluid and resolute, calm during stillness and lightning-fast when striking. The tiger (Tora), historical crest of Shotokan Karate, symbolizes feline agility, acute inner vigilance, and the moral bravery to never surrender in the face of life's difficulties.

嵐 (Arashi): Power & Transformation 道 (Do): The Lifelong Martial Way 虎 (Tora): Shotokan's Eternal Crest

The Shotokan Tradition and the Dojo Kun

Established by Master Gichin Funakoshi, Shotokan Karate rests on 3 pillars: Kihon, Kata, and Kumite. At the conclusion of every session, students and instructors recite the 5 precepts of the Dojo Kun:

Hitotsu: Seek perfection of character

Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto
Martial arts is not about overpowering others, but elevating one's own nobility of mind, moral integrity, and balance.

Hitotsu: Be faithful and sincere

Makoto no michi o mamoru koto
Honor the way of honesty, keeping promises and demonstrating upright loyalty towards family, teachers, and society.

Hitotsu: Cultivate the spirit of effort

Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto
Nurture perseverance. True worth lies in consistent daily devotion without being disheartened by temporary setbacks.

Hitotsu: Respect others and etiquette

Reigi o omonzuru koto
Treat every individual with courtesy and consideration. The martial bow reflects sincere respect for one's fellow human beings.

Hitotsu: Refrain from violent behavior

Kekki no yu o imashimuru koto
A seasoned karateka applies martial strength solely to protect life and human dignity, subduing impulses of anger and reckless violence.
